Privacy Policy

Effective date: November 2, 2026  ·  Last updated: November 2, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how PaceStep (“we”, “our” or “us”) collects, uses and protects your information when you use our Android step counter app, PaceStep: Simple Step Counter (the “App”). We only collect what the App needs to work, and we do not sell your data.

1. Information we collect

Information you provide

  • Profile details: your name, gender, age, height and weight, entered when you set up the App. We use them to calculate your BMI, recommend a daily step goal and estimate calories and distance.
  • Daily step goal: the target you choose or accept.

Information collected while you use the App

  • Step activity: your step count for each day, read from your phone's built-in step sensor.
  • Device identifier: the App does not ask you to sign up or log in. Instead, your records are linked to a device identifier (the Android ID of your device).

Stored only on your device

  • App preferences such as your language and whether you have finished setup.

The App does not use your location, and it does not access your contacts, photos, camera or microphone.

2. How we use your information

  • To count your steps and show your progress, history, calories, distance and active time.
  • To recommend a daily goal and show your BMI.
  • To show the leaderboard and your rank.
  • To restore your profile and history if you reinstall the App on the same device.
  • To keep the App working properly and secure.

3. Leaderboard visibility

The leaderboard is a community feature. Your name and step total can be seen by other users of the App, and you can see theirs. Your gender, age, height, weight and BMI are not shown on the leaderboard. If you prefer not to show your real name, you can use a nickname.

4. Where your data is stored

Your profile and daily step records are stored in a database hosted by Cloudflare, Inc. (Cloudflare D1). Data is sent between the App and our database over encrypted (HTTPS) connections.

5. Permissions the App uses

PermissionWhy we need it
Physical activity (ACTIVITY_RECOGNITION)To read your phone's step sensor so the App can count your steps.
Foreground service and health service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE, FOREGROUND_SERVICE_HEALTH)To keep counting steps in the background, with a notification, while you go about your day.
Notifications (POST_NOTIFICATIONS)To show your live step progress in the notification bar.
Run at startup (RECEIVE_BOOT_COMPLETED)To resume step counting after your phone restarts.
Internet (INTERNET)To save your profile and steps, and to load the leaderboard.

You can turn off any permission at any time in your phone's settings. Turning off Physical activity stops the App from counting steps.

6. Service providers

We use the following service providers to run the App:

  • Cloudflare – hosts our database.
  • Google Play – distributes the App.

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.

7. Planned changes: crash reporting and advertising

Not in the App today. We plan to add the services below in a future version. We are telling you in advance so there are no surprises. Before they are released, we will update this Privacy Policy and its date.

  • Crash reporting (Firebase Crashlytics, by Google): would collect crash logs and technical details such as your device model, operating system version and app version, to help us find and fix bugs.
  • Advertising (such as Google AdMob): if we add ads, they would use your device's advertising ID, approximate location from your IP address and ad interaction data to show ads. You would be able to reset or delete your advertising ID in your Android settings.

8. Keeping and deleting your data

We keep your profile and step history for as long as you have an account with the App.

Deleting your account: open Settings → Delete Account & Data in the App. This permanently deletes your profile and all your recorded step activity from our database. It cannot be undone. Your data is removed when you confirm the deletion.

Uninstalling the App on its own does not delete the data stored in our database, so please use Delete Account & Data first. If you can no longer open the App, email us at contact@pacestep.com and we will delete your data for you.

9. Your rights

Depending on where you live, including under the GDPR (European Economic Area and UK) and the CCPA/CPRA (California), you may have the right to:

  • ask what personal information we hold about you and get a copy;
  • ask us to correct information that is wrong;
  • ask us to delete your information (you can also do this yourself in the App, as described above);
  • object to or ask us to limit how we process your information.

To use any of these rights, email contact@pacestep.com. We do not sell your personal information, and we will not treat you differently for exercising your rights.

10. Children

The App is for people aged 13 and over (16 and over in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from younger children. If you believe a child has given us their information, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Security

We use reasonable technical measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections and a managed cloud database. No method of storing or transmitting data is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date above. If a change is significant, such as adding crash reporting or ads, we will make it clear before the change takes effect.
